- Schumacher breaks Alain Prost's all-time wins record — his victory at Spa was a then-record 52nd career win, passing Prost's 51
- David Coulthard P2 (65 pts) for McLaren-Mercedes and Rubens Barrichello P3 (56 pts) for Ferrari
- Ferrari take the Constructors' Championship (179 pts), comfortably clear of McLaren and Williams
- Ralf Schumacher's first F1 wins — three victories for Williams-BMW (San Marino, Canada and Germany)
- Mika Häkkinen's final F1 season — the two-time champion won at Silverstone and Indianapolis before stepping away at year's end
- F1 debuts of Fernando Alonso (Minardi), Kimi Räikkönen (Sauber) and Juan Pablo Montoya (Williams) — Montoya took his maiden win at Monza
- Classic 10-6-4-3-2-1 points system — top six only, used since 1991 and kept through 2002
- The Italian Grand Prix ran days after the September 11 attacks — drivers agreed not to overtake at the first two chicanes on the opening lap, and there were no podium celebrations
- Final season for the Benetton name (became Renault in 2002) and for Prost Grand Prix, which folded before 2002
- No Sprint races, no fastest lap bonus point
